4 Helpful Tips to Maintain the Efficiency of Your Refrigerator

With a combined 50+ years of experience, the team at Morris County Appliance Repair knows a thing or two when it comes to refrigerator maintenance. If you want to avoid future repairs and keep your refrigerator running like new, it’s important to regularly check its functionality. Follow these 4 simple tips to make sure your unit is operating smoothly and efficiently:

1) Set the correct temperature.
This will not only keep your food fresh, but it will also ensure that your refrigerator isn’t exerting unnecessary energy. Regardless of the type, your thermometer should be set between 37 and 40 degrees Fahrenheit.

2) Keep it full.
Although this may seem counter-intuitive, refrigerators run more efficiently when they are full. An adequate amount of thermal mass will help your unit absorb any warm air that may enter when you open the doors. If you can’t seem to keep your fridge full, a helpful trick is to store jugs of water inside to make the most of your space.

3) Check the door seal.
You should be performing a seal inspection a few times a year to make sure your fridge door is air-tight. Try closing a dollar bill in the door so that half of the bill is sticking out; then, pull on the bill. If it slips out too easily, your energy efficiency may be jeopardized.

4) Clean the coils.
Dust and other debris can build up on the condenser coils located at the back of your fridge, which can ultimately cause it to work harder than necessary. By periodically vacuuming or dusting these coils, you can help improve your unit’s functionality.

If you follow these 4 simple steps, your refrigerator should be running like new—and if an issue should arise, you know who to call!

Common Reasons Why a Washer Won’t Drain

If you’ve reached into your washing machine hoping to transfer your clothes to the dryer, only to find water still standing at the bottom of the tub, then you have a draining problem. There are a few common issues that can cause your washer not to drain.

  • Blockage: A blockage in the washer’s hose could be why your washer won’t drain. To determine if this is the issue, you can remove the hose that connects to the bottom of the tub and inspect it for small articles of clothing or other objects that might be lodged in there.
  • Hose: A kinked hose is another reason that washers refuse to drain. Fortunately, this is an easy fix. Simply straighten out the hose, and the washer should begin draining.
  • Pump: A broken or malfunctioning pump could also be the reason that your washing machine isn’t draining. To check, turn the washer on during an empty cycle. If the pump is working, you’ll be able to hear it. If it isn’t working, fixing the pump problem will require you to remove it first.
  • Lid Switch: If there’s a problem with the lid switch, your whole washing machine will stop working. Try depressing the switch by hand. If it clicks, then it’s not the issue. If it doesn’t, you will need to replace the switch.
  • Belt: If the belt on your machine has slipped out of place or is damaged, this could cause your washer not to drain.

Of course, this isn’t an exhaustive list of reasons your washer isn’t draining properly. If you’ve looked into these common causes and you’re still having trouble diagnosing the issue, call Morris County Appliance Repair for help. We’ll find the underlying issue and get your washer working in no time. Call now to learn more!

4 Easy DIY Tips for Maintaining Your Microwave

Microwaves make life so much easier and more convenient. Whether you’re zapping a frozen breakfast sandwich to take on your morning commute or you’re defrosting a couple pounds of ground beef to use for dinner, you probably rely on your microwave multiple times a day. That’s why you need to keep it running smoothly and efficiently.

In this post, we’ll give you a few, super-easy tips to help you take care of your microwave for the long haul. Let’s jump in!

1. Keep It Clean

You should clean the inside of your microwave frequently. Not only is this essential for proper food safety and hygiene, but it’s also a significant factor in how well your microwave performs. You see, when food spills or splatters inside your microwave, the residue can actually absorb a portion of the microwave’s energy. This causes the residue to burn and reduces the unit’s overall efficiency.

2. Be Gentle

Close your microwave door gently. Don’t slam it shut. You may think your microwave is solid and sturdy, but slamming the door can actually damage the latch mechanism. Latch mechanisms must operate in a certain order, so if you slam the door and mess with this order, you could actually cause a blown, internal fuse.

3. Only Use When Full

You should never run your microwave when there’s no food or liquid inside of it. If you need it as a timer, use the separate kitchen timer function, which will operate the timer without actually turning on the microwave’s cooking energy. It’s crucial to do this because, otherwise, the microwave’s energy will just bounce around inside, since there’s nothing to absorb it. This could cause the magnetron to overheat and lead to a very expensive repair.

4. Don’t Try to Be an Electrician

Microwaves are deceptive because they’re smaller than all of your other kitchen appliances. However, although they may look harmless, they’re anything but. Microwaves can store thousands of volts of electricity (even after they’ve been unplugged), which makes them extremely dangerous to anyone who isn’t a certified electrician. Therefore, never attempt electrical repairs on your microwave yourself. Besides, if an electronic part needs to be replaced, you’re looking at a price comparable to that of a brand-new microwave—so you’re probably better off just buying a new one, instead.

By following our suggestions above, you’ll get many, many years of powerful use out of your microwave. However, if you have any questions, Morris County Appliance Repair is here to help. We’re proud to serve homeowners in Morris County with exceptional appliance repair services, so don’t hesitate to reach out.

Troubleshoot a Leaky Freezer Unit

Have you ever seen frost buildup in an old freezer or dorm-style fridge? It forms when moisture in the air is trapped inside, freezes, and accumulates over time. To get rid of it, you have to take everything out of the appliance, unplug it, and leave the door open to let all that frost melt and drain out.

This is not a particularly fun or convenient process, to say the least!

Most modern freezers circumvent this issue via a self-defrosting feature. The moisture in the air still freezes and starts creating that layer of frost, but then a heating element within the freezer warms up that frozen layer just enough to melt it and let it drain away (but not enough to defrost your frozen goodies). Then, the cooling element takes over, your food stays cold, and the next layer of frost starts to form.

This cycle of defrosting, draining, and cooling is regulated by a timer. When it’s working well, you never even notice that it’s happening!

Sadly, however, not everything works well all the time. One of the most common issues people run into with self-defrosting freezers is water leaking out the bottom. This can happen if the frost that gets melted and drained away doesn’t all stay melted on its way out.

Ideally, the defrost water will flow out through a drain at the bottom of the appliance, where it’s caught by a drain pan and evaporates. If the water gets too cold before it drains, though, it will reform into ice and block the drain. Then, the next round of defrost water won’t be able to get out, and water will end up leaking from the bottom of the freezer.

While inconvenient, this type of leakage is not the end of the world! All you need to do is melt the ice that’s formed in the drain and you’ll be good to go. One of the easiest ways to do this is by using a turkey baster filled with hot water to flush the drain line. This will melt the ice and let the defrost water flow out once again.

At Morris County Appliance Repair, we’re committed to providing outstanding customer service, including sharing useful how-to tips for simple appliance fixes like this freezer drain advice. We’re always here if you need more assistance with appliance troubleshooting or repairs in Rockaway or the surrounding area!

One Simple Dishwasher Trick to Improve Performance and Avoid Breakdowns

Tired of your dishes coming out of the dishwasher not quite clean? Wish there was something you could do to make your dishwasher perform better? Actually, there is!

There’s a simple step any homeowner can take that will both improve your dishwasher’s performance and help keep it running better long term. Just rinse your dishes. Running a little warm water over your plates and other dishes before they go into the dishwasher can make a huge difference in how your appliance performs. Why? Because all that food that’s stuck on your plates, bowls, and spoons has to go somewhere. If it’s still on your dishes when they go into the dishwasher, that food frequently ends up clogging the pump, sprayer arms, drain, or other dishwasher components. This prevents your dishwasher from operating as effectively, keeps your dishes from getting as clean, and can even lead to complete dishwasher breakdowns.

So if you’re looking for an easy way to get your dishes cleaner and save money on potential dishwasher repairs, a quick rinse will go a long way!

Have questions about other dishwasher tips? Need professional dishwasher repair to diagnose and resolve a problem? Morris County Appliance Repair is happy to be your local resource for expert dishwasher service. Just call now to learn more.
