Genius Appliance Hacks You Wish You Knew

Did you know you can get more convenience and functionality out of your everyday appliances? By thinking outside the box and using your appliances in unconventional ways, you can clean, heat, prep, and get mundane tasks done in a fraction of the time.

Check out these brilliant hacks and see what else you can think of on your own! Don’t forget to call Morris County Appliance Repair and let us know what genius ideas you came up with.

1. Wash Baseball Caps in the Dishwasher

Baseball caps aren’t easy to wash in the machine, which leads many folks to buy special gear to keep them intact during laundering. But did you know there’s an easier way to get those dirty, sweaty caps clean?

Simply place them on the top rack of your dishwasher, secure them to the pegs with a clothespin, and run it. Be sure to skip the drying cycle! Once they’ve been washed, reshape them with your hands and lay them on a flat surface to air dry.

2. Use Your Waffle Maker to Cook Bacon

With a waffle maker (or panini press), you can cut the time it takes to cook bacon in half! This is because the bacon cooks on both sides at once, so it cooks faster and comes out super-crispy and delicious.

3. Use Your Freezer to Remove Gum

Did your kid get gum stuck on their shoe or toy? Throw it in the freezer! After a few hours, you’ll be able to chip away at the frozen gum and remove it much more easily.

4. Soften Solidified Sugar in the Microwave

We’ve all had our brown sugar turn into a hard brick at one time or another. To soften it, put your sugar in a sealed plastic bag with a few drops of water, then microwave it for 10-20 seconds on medium power. (Alternatively, you can place the sugar in a microwave-safe bowl and cover it with a damp paper towel.) Repeat as necessary until all the lumps are out.

The Five Most Common Problems With Electric Stoves

Do you have an electric stove?

Depending on the make, model, and how long you’ve owned it, you might be familiar with some of these common problems with electric stoves. However, even if you’ve been lucky enough that you haven’t dealt with any of these issues yet, it’s smart to educate yourself on what could possibly go wrong down the road.

So, without further ado, here are the top five most common electric stove problems.

1. Constant Clicking or Popping Sound

If your stove makes a clicking or popping sound every time you turn it on, the problem could be caused by a few different things, namely the infinite control switch making electrical contact or the metallic components of your stove expanding too quickly as they heat up.

2. Burner Won’t Turn On

When one of your electric stove burners won’t turn on, it could be caused by a defective burner, a faulty electrical connection in the burner socket, or a failed switch.

3. Burner Won’t Turn Off

An electric stove burner that won’t turn off could be related to a number of defects: broken knob, control pad error, shorted surface element, or bad surface element switch.

4. Burner Not Getting Hot Enough

There could be a wide range of underlying issues that are preventing your electric stove burners from heating up sufficiently, but they mainly boil down to the following: damaged heating element, problematic power source receptacle, loose or burnt wire, or defective selector switch.

5. Cracked Glass Stovetop

People sometimes forget that their glass stovetops are still glass—meaning, they’re not invincible. Your glass stovetop can crack due to high impact, a buildup of micro-scratches, excessive heat, hot spots created by cooked-on food, or thermal shock.

If you’re facing any of these or other issues with your electric stove, call Morris County Appliance Repair! We’re standing by to help customers with oven and stove repairs in Morris County and beyond.

These Are the Fridge Noises That Should Actually Concern You

Refrigerators make lots of noises during regular operation. Sometimes, it can be difficult to tell which noises are a normal part of a fridge’s cycles and which noises are signs of trouble.

To help you understand when it’s time to actually worry and call a refrigerator repair technician, Morris County Appliance Repair put together this quick guide. If your fridge isn’t making one of these sounds, then you can breathe a sigh of relief.

Refrigerator Noises to Watch Out For

Sounds like something is hitting the fan blades:

  • Grinding
  • Scraping
  • Knocking

These noises mean something is blocking one of your fridge’s two fan blades (one is a condenser fan, one is an evaporator fan in the freezer).

Sounds like something is trying to run but isn’t connected properly:

  • Recurring clicking
  • Recurring buzzing
  • Recurring vibrating

These noises likely mean that the water line isn’t connected to the ice maker correctly. The ice maker is turned on and attempting to make ice, but there is no water supply.

Sounds like something is rattling.

This rattling noise could be caused by one of a few possible scenarios:

  • Your fridge may be coming into contact with another surface nearby.
  • Your fridge may not be level.
  • Your fridge’s drain pan may have fallen out of place.

Sounds like normal humming has gotten louder.

If the usual humming of the compressor has gotten exceedingly loud, there is likely a problem with the compressor.

Sounds like… total silence.

Your fridge should always be emitting a faint hum. If no noise is coming from your fridge whatsoever, that means your fridge has been cut off from power or your fridge’s compressor has malfunctioned.

Have you noticed any of these troublesome noises coming from your refrigerator? Call Morris County Appliance Repair ASAP! Let us get your refrigerator repaired today.

Upgrade Your Outdated Kitchen With These Smart Appliances

If you’re looking to remodel your kitchen and give it the upgrade you’ve been wanting for years, why not go big with a few state-of-the-art appliances?

“Smart home” technology is a total game changer when it comes to convenience and simplicity. And when you incorporate that with the major kitchen appliances you use every day, just imagine how much time and headache you’ll save.

To get you started, we’re highlighting a handful of the smart kitchen appliances that we think are actually worth the splurge. Take a look and let us know what you think!

Smart Microwave Oven

Who among us hasn’t been preparing a meal, hands covered in grease or sauce, and wished they could just talk to their microwave instead of getting the buttons all messy? That can be a reality now with a smart microwave.

For example, GE makes a smart microwave that connects to Amazon Alexa, which means you can control it with your voice.

Smart Coffee Maker

Speaking of voice control… How amazing would it be to wake up in bed and say, “Alexa, start the coffee,” before you even pull the covers off?

Hamilton Beach has a model that you can control with the Amazon Alexa app or your own Amazon Echo device.

Smart Dishwasher

A dishwasher that automatically dispenses the perfect amount of detergent for each load depending on the number of dishes? Yes, please.

And if you go for the Miele G7000 series, you can even connect your dishwasher to the Miele app and have it automatically reorder detergent disks when you’re running low. No more fights with your spouse when you forget to grab more detergent from the store!

Smart Refrigerator

We’ve all seen the commercials for refrigerators with cameras on the inside and touchscreens on the outside. But in 2021, smart refrigerators are taking it up a notch.

Now, with models like the Samsung Family Hub, not only can you connect your smart fridge to Google Assistant or Amazon Alexa, but you can also search online for recipes and purchase ingredients while you stand in the middle of your kitchen.

Talk about convenient!

And of course, if you need any assistance installing your smart kitchen appliances, don’t hesitate to call Morris County Appliance Repair. We’re standing by to help!

Dryer Not Spinning? One of These Three Parts May Be to Blame

Is your dryer’s drum failing to spin?

This problem can be a huge headache because when your dryer isn’t spinning, it isn’t doing its one and only job: to dry your clothes. Thankfully, troubleshooting and repairing a dryer drum that’s not turning is fairly simple. In this blog post, we’ll give you a quick overview of the three dryer parts that are the most likely culprits.

1. Drive Belt

Responsible for physically spinning the drum, the drive belt wraps around the drum, the tension pulley, and the motor pulley. Since it’s the primary force behind your dryer’s tumbling capabilities, the drive belt is known to wear out and break after years of use.

Therefore, if your drum isn’t turning, your drive belt is suspect number one. To check it, turn the drum with your hands. If the drum easily moves on its own, then the problem is due to the drive belt failing to turn it.

This requires a replacement of your drive belt.

2. Drum Rollers and/or Roller Axles

The vast majority of dryer models have support rollers in the front and back of the drum. When the rollers break or wear out, they’re unable to spin freely on their own. This may cause them to keep your dryer drum from turning.

To find out if the rollers (and/or axles) are the source of your problem, remove the drive belt and try to manually turn the drum. If the drum still won’t spin, then the rollers are likely to blame. They will need to be replaced.

3. Drum Bearing

In most models, the drum bearing supports the rear of the drum. Like the rollers, the drum bearing commonly wears out after years of use, which could prevent the drum from turning easily.

To check if it’s the drum bearing, remove the drive belt and use the same process from above. If you’re able to turn the drum by hand but experience some resistance and a lot of noise, then your drum bearing is probably the root of the issue. It will need to be replaced.

Reach Out for Help

Keep in mind, these are not the only possible causes of a dryer failing to spin.

If you tried troubleshooting your dryer using the guidance above and still haven’t been able to uncover the culprit, call Morris County Appliance Repair for help. Serving all of Morris County and beyond, we’d be happy to come out and repair your dryer for good!

Three Possible Reasons Your Dishwasher Is Not Drying Dishes

It’s so frustrating when you open the dishwasher only to discover that your dishes are still dripping wet and you have to towel-dry them all by hand.

What’s causing this to happen?

If it’s a persistent problem, then you likely have an issue with one of the following: the heating element, the high-limit thermostat, or the rinse aid dispenser.

1. Broken Heating Element

This is the most common culprit when your dishwasher is not drying dishes.

As its namesake suggests, the heating element is responsible for heating up your dishwasher. If it’s not heating up sufficiently, then the water on your dishes will not evaporate.

2. Malfunctioning High-Limit Thermostat

A problem with your high-limit thermostat is similar to a broken heating element in that it won’t allow your dishwasher to reach a high enough temperature.

If your heating element appears to be in fine shape, then your high-limit thermostat is likely the cause of your issue. You can test your thermostat by using a multimeter. Use your owner’s manual to locate the thermostat inside the unit.

3. Faulty Rinse Aid Dispenser

Finally, if your heating element and thermostat are functioning properly, then the problem may be related to inadequate rinse aid distribution.

Rinse aid helps your dishes dry faster, so if the dispenser is clogged or needs to be refilled, then it may be hindering your dishwasher’s ability to remove excess water.

Still need help? Don’t hesitate to book a service call with Morris County Appliance Repair. One of our technicians will be over right away to troubleshoot, diagnose, and repair your dishwasher with ease. Call now!

Is Your Oven Not Cooking Food Correctly?

If you’re pulling food out of the oven only to find that it’s still pale around the edges or cold in the center—even though you followed your recipe to the letter!—then you’ve likely got a problem with your oven’s temperature sensor.

See, when you preheat your oven, you’re relying on the oven’s internal temperature sensor to know when it’s reached the temperature you set. However, when that sensor becomes weak or faulty in some way, it may think the oven has reached the correct temperature when it actually hasn’t. This can lead to many unfortunate cooking mishaps.

Thankfully, there are a few common causes of this problem that can be easily fixed. Keep reading to find out more!

Common Causes of Incorrect Oven Temperature

  • Temperature sensor is touching the wall.
    • Move the sensor so it’s not making any contact with the wall of your oven. This could be what’s causing the sensor to think the oven is hotter than it actually is.
  • Defective temperature sensor.
    • If moving the sensor to a different position in the oven didn’t fix the problem, you’ll need to test that the sensor is working. This requires an ohmmeter. If you don’t own one or don’t know how to use it, you’ll need the assistance of a technician.
  • Sensor needs to be re-calibrated.
    • Buy an oven thermometer and place it in the middle of your oven.
    • Heat the oven to 350° F. Take a temperature reading every 20 minutes for 2 hours total. Add up the temperature readings and divide the sum by the number of readings you took to get the average temperature. How close is that to 350? The difference is what you’ll need to know so you can adjust your preheat temperatures accordingly.

If these temperature sensor tricks don’t fix the problem, then the issue might be related to your electric heating elements or gas igniter. In this case, you’ll need to call Morris County Appliance Repair for help. We’re standing by to help local homeowners in Morris County get their appliances running smoothly again!
