How to Clean Your Glass-Top Stove the All-Natural Way

Keeping your glass stove top clean is a huge part of keeping the appliance running smoothly. By keeping this surface clean, you can increase the life of your stove. Sometimes, though, harsh chemical cleaners can permanently mar the glass top or leave a residue or ‘film’ over the top of it, and you certainly don’t want that.

Instead, here is one method you can use to keep your stove top clean using a few natural ingredients. All you’ll need to keep your glass stove-top looking great is a razor blade, white vinegar, and baking soda.

  1. Vinegar. Wipe your stove down with the white vinegar and a clean towel first. Make sure that all of your burners are cool before you start! Vinegar is applied best using a spray bottle, but even pouring it directly on the stove in small doses will help de-grease the surface and lift grime from the glass.
  2. Apply baking soda. Once the vinegar has been wiped away and the stove top is dry again, apply baking soda over the surface of the glass. Spreading an even layer of powder is the best way to go here. Why baking soda? It’s gritty enough to scrub away any stuck-on messes without scratching the glass.
  3. A damp towel. Soak a towel (or multiple towels) in warm water and then wring it out. Place the dampened towel over the surface of the baking soda on your stove top. Over the course of 15 minutes, this will loosen any stuck-on dirt and help make scrubbing more effective.
  4. Scrub. After 15 minutes, you can use a towel to start scrubbing away at the baking soda. Make sure to rinse your towel out frequently while you’re scrubbing. When there is no trace of baking soda left on your stove top, you’re finished with this step.
  5. Scrape off stubborn dirt. If there are any hard, burnt-on spots that haven’t yet come off, this is the time to use the razor blade. Make sure the stove is still damp and that the material you’re scraping away is a bit damp as well, then use the razor blade to gently lift and remove the grime. Make sure that you use slow, even motions and don’t scrape in back-and-forth gestures to avoid scratching the surface of your stove.
  6. Vinegar again. When all of the worst spots are gone and you’ve scrubbed all that you can, polish your glass with another round of vinegar on a damp cloth. This will make your glass shine and remove any residue that’s been left behind.

Using this method, you’ll get your cooktop glass looking great again in no time! If your stove needs a repair even after a thorough cleaning, give Morris County Appliance service a call! We service most home appliance brands, and we’d be happy to help you get your appliances repaired in Morris County.

Common Issues When a Dishwasher Won’t Drain

Is your dishwasher still filled with water at the end of the cycle? There are a few common reasons that your dishwasher won’t drain.

Check for Clogs

One of the most common issues that prevents a dishwasher from draining is a clogged filter. Small pieces of food might get stuck in the filter and then clog the drain. If there’s more than a few cups of water left in your dishwasher, you’ll want to remove as much of it as you can and then check for anything that could be clogging the filter.

Check the Drain Hose

Another common reason for a dishwasher that won’t drain is a blocked or kinked drain hose. If your drain hose is blocked in some way, then water won’t be able to drain out. To check for a block in your drain hose, you will need to remove it to inspect it and clear it out.

Check Your Garbage Disposal

In many households, dishwashers are connected to garbage disposals, and if your garbage disposal is clogged then your dishwasher won’t drain. If you’re experiencing a problem with your dishwasher draining, take a look at your garbage disposal and see if there is a blockage that you can remove.

If you’re struggling with a dishwasher that won’t drain, Morris County Appliance Service has you covered. We can pinpoint the exact issue that is causing your dishwasher not to drain. Contact us today to solve your dishwasher problems!

Fixing Your Dishwasher’s Food Residue Problems

At some point, most homeowners will run into a problem with their dishwasher leaving food residue behind. It’s a common problem, but how do you fix it? Here are some things that can be causing your food residue woes, and some tips for fixing it yourself:

  • The water is too cool. If your dishwasher relies on the hot water heater in your home for hot water (rather than internal heating), the water heater’s setting might be too cool for effective washing. Turn up the dial on your hot water heater.
  • The water pressure is too low. A water pressure that registers as too low might affect how well your dishwasher works. You can call city utilities to try and fix this, or avoid using water in other parts of the house while you’re washing dishes. (In other words, don’t run the shower or washing machine at the same time as the dishwasher.)
  • The drain system is clogged. You may have to check the drain pump and hoses because they can become clogged over time. They will need to be drained. If it’s not the drain hose, there is a filter on the bottom of the dishwasher that might need to be cleaned out.
  • You’re using the wrong detergent. Certain water types and dishwashers work better with different detergents, so switch it up if your dishwasher isn’t functioning right.
  • Your dishes could be loaded wrong. Take the time to figure out if you’re loading the dishwasher improperly, as this can lead to issues as well. For instance, you may be inadvertently blocking the spray arms with a large dish.

Easy Ways to Keep Your Oven Clean

Do you dread cleaning your oven? You’re not alone. In fact, you’re in the majority. Most homeowners procrastinate when it comes to giving their ovens a good scrub because they genuinely despise doing it. However, if you follow our suggestions in this blog post, you’ll discover how to clean your oven in a way that’s actually much less painful than you’re used to.

So, let’s get started!

1. Clean your oven every three months if you use it frequently, or once a year if you only use it on occasion.

2. Know the signs that your oven is dirty and needs a scrub:

  • Dark grease splatters on the inside of the door
  • Crust or grime on the bottom
  • Strong odor when it heats up
  • Smoke when it heats up

3. Don’t always rely on the self-clean function. The self-clean function drives up your oven’s internal temperature to 550° F and literally melts away the crud lining your oven. However, this only works if your oven is lightly to moderately dirty. If you use your oven frequently and there’s a good amount of grease and residue coating the inside of your oven, then the self-clean function may actually backfire on you, creating tons of smoke or even starting a fire.

4. Short on time? Use a store-bought cleaner. Don’t be shy. They’re more powerful and faster acting, so if the time commitment is what turns you off from cleaning your oven, then this is the route you want to take. (Note: You’ll need to wear protective eyewear and rubber gloves when using store-bought cleaner.)

5. Not in a time crunch? Go the DIY route with a mixture of baking soda, water, and vinegar in a spray bottle. This method is definitely less harsh than store-bought chemicals, so it’s safer to use around kids or anyone who’s sensitive to fumes. However, be warned: After you apply the mixture (which is like a paste), you’ll have to let it sit for 10-12 hours before wiping it off.

6. Regardless of which cleaning solution you use, follow these same basic steps:

  • Remove all items, including racks, from the inside of your oven.
  • Spray the cleaning solution all around the inside of your oven, covering the top, sides, door, and bottom.
    • For gas ovens, don’t spray where the gas comes out. For electric ovens, don’t get cleaner on the heating elements. Spray underneath them, instead.
  • Let the cleaning solution sit (20-30 minutes for store-bought cleaner; 10-12 hours for homemade).
  • In the meantime, spray oven racks (outside if using store-bought cleaner) and place them into a garbage bag. Tie the bag and let them sit for the same amount of time as the oven.
  • After the time has passed, use a damp rag to wipe off the cleaning solution. If you encounter any particularly sticky spots, use an abrasive object (e.g. pumice, Brillo Pad, microfiber sponge) to give them an extra scrub.
  • Dry off the racks and the inside of the oven.
  • You’re finished!

7. The key is letting your oven and oven racks soak in the cleaning solution for the instructed amount of time. After a good soak, all that grime and grease is much easier to wipe off—which means a lot less scrubbing for you.

See? When it’s all laid out like this, it doesn’t seem so bad. Like any other household chore, the mental hurdle is much tougher than the job itself.

As your local appliance repair specialists, we at Morris County Appliance Service see firsthand how regularly cleaning your appliances can have a positive effect on their performance and lifespan. So, make sure you get the most out of your oven by giving it a good clean every once in a while!

Is Your Dryer Not Heating Properly?

There’s nothing worse than doing a load of laundry, taking your fresh clothes out of the dryer, and discovering your items are all still cold and damp. What gives?

Unfortunately, this is a common symptom of a dryer that’s not heating properly. The good news, however, is that this can be a pretty straightforward repair. Whether you’re an avid DIY-er around the house or you prefer to delegate to an appliance repair technician, it should only take less than an hour to fix.

If you decide to poke around and troubleshoot your dryer yourself, you’ll need to know where to look. Your dryer’s heat problem will most likely be rooted in one of the following components:

  • Fuse
  • Temperature switch
  • Thermostat
  • Electric heating element
  • Timer
  • Gas igniter
  • Radiant sensor
  • Gas control valve
  • Coils

However, we strongly suggest thinking twice about performing your own dryer repair if you’ve never done it before. Dryers are complex machines with lots of small parts and circuitry. When handled improperly, some serious damage, including electrical shock, could result. And if you have a gas unit, the potential hazards are even more severe.

In other words, if you have any hesitation or doubt regarding your ability to repair this issue yourself, don’t risk it. Instead, call your local appliance repair professionals at Morris County Appliance Repair. We’ll troubleshoot, diagnose, and repair your dryer’s heat problem with total safety and efficiency.

4 Helpful Tips to Maintain the Efficiency of Your Refrigerator

With a combined 50+ years of experience, the team at Morris County Appliance Repair knows a thing or two when it comes to refrigerator maintenance. If you want to avoid future repairs and keep your refrigerator running like new, it’s important to regularly check its functionality. Follow these 4 simple tips to make sure your unit is operating smoothly and efficiently:

1) Set the correct temperature.
This will not only keep your food fresh, but it will also ensure that your refrigerator isn’t exerting unnecessary energy. Regardless of the type, your thermometer should be set between 37 and 40 degrees Fahrenheit.

2) Keep it full.
Although this may seem counter-intuitive, refrigerators run more efficiently when they are full. An adequate amount of thermal mass will help your unit absorb any warm air that may enter when you open the doors. If you can’t seem to keep your fridge full, a helpful trick is to store jugs of water inside to make the most of your space.

3) Check the door seal.
You should be performing a seal inspection a few times a year to make sure your fridge door is air-tight. Try closing a dollar bill in the door so that half of the bill is sticking out; then, pull on the bill. If it slips out too easily, your energy efficiency may be jeopardized.

4) Clean the coils.
Dust and other debris can build up on the condenser coils located at the back of your fridge, which can ultimately cause it to work harder than necessary. By periodically vacuuming or dusting these coils, you can help improve your unit’s functionality.

If you follow these 4 simple steps, your refrigerator should be running like new—and if an issue should arise, you know who to call!
