Is Your Window AC Ready for Summer?

It’s only the end of May, but summer’s hot temperatures have already made their way to North Jersey and are starting to settle in. That means it’s time to install those window AC units stat!

But not so fast. First, you need to make sure your AC is ready for the job ahead. Here’s what you need to do:

  1. Check for pests. Insects, bees, wasps, and small critters love to build nests inside window ACs. Depending on where and how your unit was stored, it could have become a vacation home for a family of pests.
  2. Clean the air filter. Remove the filter (typically located behind the front panel) and gently clean it with warm water and dish soap. Then, let it air dry. Do not squeeze it or attempt to wring it out. Doing so would compromise the filter’s structure. Also, if you suffer from environmental allergies (mold, dust, pollen, etc.), you should do this at least once a month while the unit is in use.
  3. Clean the condenser coils. Dust, dirt, and other contaminants will collect on the condenser coils over time, clogging up your unit’s airflow. As a result, your unit will have to work harder to produce cool air, which will cause your electricity bill to spike. You can clean the condenser coils by blowing compressed air at them, vacuuming them with a hose attachment, or wiping them with a soft-bristle brush.
  4. Clean the water pan. At the base of your window AC unit, a water pan collects condensation and coolant drippings. It has the potential to be a breeding ground for mold, mildew, and bacteria, so be sure to clean it before its first use and every couple of months during use.

By doing these easy steps to prep your window AC unit, you’ll be able to enjoy clean, healthy, and cool air all summer long.
